“WHAT’S THE 27 CLUB? WE AIN’T MAKING IT PAST 21” - juice wrld

Leveraging my deep knowledge and expertise around the Soundcloud and Internet Rap scenes, I worked on a podcast exploring the lives and tragic deaths of generation-defining Hip-Hop artists; Pop Smoke, Juice WRLD, Lil Peep, and XXXTentacion.

All 4 artists sadly passed at 21 or younger, to either drugs or gun violence, after achieving varying, yet equally massive scales of success.

The podcast aimed to highlight these artists’ journeys and trajectories, along with exploring the social phenomena, cultural topics and changes within young people and Hip-Hop today that may have contributed to their deaths.

MY ROLE?

Working with the BBC Factual team, I played a key part in the research and development process, meticulously fact-checking the storyline and narrative for accuracy, artist respect and cultural relevancy, as well as resourcing methods of contacting people of interest and their details.

I resourced archive content from across social media, YouTube and the wider Internet to feature in the Podcast, in line with licensing laws.

Alongside the Executive Producer, I conducted interviews with contributors, most notably, Lil Peep’s Mother, Kathryn Womack.

I also created musical soundbeds/instrumentals for the podcast, most noticably, the beat at the start of each episode.

Additionally, my research contributions also informed the associated BBC Three documentary, and I worked with members of the documentary team to share information, resources and findings to help them with i dontheir decisions.
